Helping Small Farms Grow
The Local Roots business model was developed with the help of small farmers. We are a year-round market where producers do not have to be on-site, allowing farmers to stay in their fields and gardens and expand production.
By working cooperatively, even the smallest farms enjoy access to a downtown market that they would not otherwise have. The Café staff buys directly from farms and makes delicious ready-to-eat foods from excess and imperfect products that otherwise might go to waste. The on-site Commercial Kitchen helps to preserve the harvest and add value to raw ingredients.
Farmers also deserve a fair price for the beautiful, delicious and healthy food they provide. At Local Roots, products are separated and identified by producer with each producer setting his or her own price. The Local Roots business model relies on volunteers and community support to keep costs low, so 75-82% of each dollar goes back to the person who made or grew your food.
This system keeps money, and good food, in our community… where it belongs.
